Audiobooks, Ho!

Some of you might have seen the tweets and fb statuses that I’ve been making about trying to decide which book of mine should go audio first. After much thought and input, I’ve decided to go with the first Two Monarchies book, Spindle.

Right?

Not so much. Because now I have to find the perfect narrator. Which is something rather difficult for me, given that I don’t actually listen to audiobooks, don’t like listening to audiobooks, and don’t really know what I’m looking for.

So if you guys have a favourite narrator, a personal recommendation, or anything similar—chuck it at me. Over the next month or two I’ll be gathering samples and auditions, and at the end of that time, I’ll post ’em here on the blog and through my newsletter for you guys to pick which one you like the best.

I’m really excited about this, even if I’m not an audiobook person, and I can’t wait to see how Spindle comes out!

I really enjoyed listening to Alan Corduner narrating the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. He did an amazing job, even with the female voices. He gave such depth to each character

Thanks, Rosanna =) I actually was weighing up the pros and cons of male vs female voice, so that’s useful to know =)

Becky Doughty is an incredible narrator. And she can do a variety of accents! She sounds posh but simultaneously warm and very expressive. A perfect fit for your stories!

  3. Exciting times! I also don’t know the first thing about audiobooks. Consider looking up and listening to samples of audiobooks for books that match in sub-genre and seeing (a) what the narrator’s voice is like and (b) if there are any stellar narrators you want to contact directly. It’s a bit of legwork, but it might pay itself back. Best of luck!

Yeah, I kinda expected the legwork 😀 I figure it’ll take a couple months just to find a few samples to share and get opinions on, but I think it’s totally worth it =)

I’m listening to an audiobook narrated by Steven Pacey, and he’s been fantastic so far- wonderful at different voices without making female and children’s voices sound ridiculous. The book I’m listening to requires sarcasm for the main character and he’s doing an amazing job of it!! ?? Were you looking for any particular accent for the narrator to have?

Oh wait! I just saw this comment! My blog has been eating comments lately >:(

I’ll have to look up Steven Pacey, he sounds great! Sarcasm, of course, is an important part of any book of mine… 😀

I think for accent I’ll go with English, but there are a lot of great American narrators out there, too, so…

I’ve been listening to Robert Jackson Bennett’s Divine Cities trilogy as read by Alma Cuervo on Audible. She does a great job on all three of the books. I would highly recommend her. I also recommend the books in the trilogy: “City of Stairs” “City of Blades” and “City of Miracles” they are some of my favorite books of fantasy.
