Suddenly, a Book!

You blokes know I’ve been struggling to get the latest Between book out there in preorder status due to my cover artist unavoidably being out of office a fair bit over the last month. Despite that, she worked right up until the Thanksgiving holiday and produced a gorgeous cover for Between Homes (you can see it below).

So of course, instead of creating a preorder for a tiny period of five days, I just went ahead and published it out of hand. Which means if you’ve been waiting for book five of the City Between series, you can buy it now! Just click on the book cover below…

Happy reading, and for all my American readers, Happy Thanksgiving/Happy Holidays!

G’day. I’m Pet. Not, not Pet–I am a pet.

Well, I was a pet: I used to belong to two fae and a stroppy vampire. Now I’m homeless. I mean, I was always technically homeless, but this time it’s different.

I just got used to having some kind of family, and now we’re back to everyone wanting to kill each other–and guess who the weak link is?

I’ll give you a hint: it’s not the vampire, and it’s sure as heck not the fae.

Lady of Weeds Cover Reveal & Preorder Link!

You heard it here first! (Well, second, anyway: my mailing list heard it first). LADY OF WEEDS is finally available for preorder with a publication date of 31st August, 2019!

Available on Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, B&N, Smashwords, Google Play, and iBooks (check back for your link if it’s not yet there!)

*cries*
It’s so pretty!

Beware the gift left too close to the sea…

Cold, isolated, and almost a thing of the sea herself, Carys keeps the seashore. It’s a simple calling: Collect the seaweed along the rocky shore every day before the selkies come out to play, or pay the consequences. She knows the workings of the laws between the sea and the shore, and she collects payment from the sea itself. Issues of King and country barely touch that moving, foamy border: Only saltwater, selkies, and seaweed exist by the rocky shore. Every day is the same for Carys; a cold continuity of service.

Then a boy washes up in one of Cary’s tide-pools: Injured, amnesiac, and bearing with him a token of her past without the memories to accompany it. Now she will need to keep him safe from enemies both at land and at sea; but the land is a mystery to her, and as for the sea—no one knows better than Carys that a single slip of the foot means death by the rocky shore.

Or that for every gift given by the selkies, there must be payment in one form or another…

Playing Hearts Repackaged and Bound

Well, it’s kinda true. I was looking for a suitable, inexpensive premade cover for Cloudy With a Chance of Dropbears so I could finally publish that novellette.

And as often happens when I do that, I first found a suitable cover for another book. Luckily for me, it was Playing Hearts for which I found a suitable new cover.

It’s lucky for you guys, too, since the previous cover was the dreadful product of my own endeavours (hey, I’m a writer, not an artist).

And the blog post title says “bound” because the paperback is finally redone and prettied up with the new cover!

If you guys are new to the blog and/or new to me, Playing Hearts is my Alice in Wonderland novella riff featuring Australian girl Mabel, who grows up slipping between the “real” world and “Underland”.

Blurb is below the new cover for your perusal, along with all the links should you wish to purchase! Enjoy!

It begins the way it has always begun: with a card on Mabel’s pillow. But Mabel has been in Underland before, and she’s not so anxious to go back. No matter what name it takes, Underland is always bizarre, always mad, always dangerous.

There’s the Queen of Hearts, terrifying, powerful, and possibly insane. There’s Hatter, purple-eyed and undoubtedly mad. March Hare has always been one sandwich short of a picnic, and Sir Blanc is missing his wits.

And then there’s Jack. Jack the aristocratic son of the Queen. Not quite mad, but not far off. Disinclined to help anyone but himself. A liar. And, thanks to an ancient ceremony performed by the Queen, Mabel’s fiancé.

Fall into the rabbit hole with Mabel as she climbs through tea-pots, battles the Jabberwock, and attempts to overthrow the Queen of Hearts herself.

Don’t lose your head.

And whatever you do, don’t be late…

Get Playing Hearts at Amazon(Kindle/Paperback) Kobo, Smashwords, B & N(Nook/Paperback), iBooks, and Google Play.

Between Floors gets a facelift!

Hi guys! Just updating you all with some very exciting news–BETWEEN FLOORS has had an upgrade to match it with the other books in the series!

Now that I’ve finally got my ducks in a row with regards to my poor, overworked cover designer, feast your eyes!

Awk! So AMAZING! The teacup!

I’m not supposed to push through the boundaries of reality without supervision. I’m definitely not meant to drag a cop Between with me.

But stuff happens, you know?

Hi. I’m Pet. Well, not Pet, exactly. I am a pet.

Nothing too hard; I just cook and clean for the Behindkind who took over my house. Easy. But now one of my owners has gone missing. He’s fae, so it shouldn’t worry me, but if there’s something out there that can kidnap fae, I don’t wanna meet it.

Good thing I’ve got another two owners and a spare cop up my sleeve…

Cover Reveal: STAFF AND CROWN

It’s the Penultimate Publication!

Well, it’s a cover reveal, anyway.

I’ve been scribbling up a rough blurb for Staff and Crown because I have this gorgeous cover to show you all (and a low-key preorder up on Amazon, shortly to be followed by the other distributors). The blurb will probably be tweaked a few times before I’m happy with it, but I’m more than happy with the cover! Check out the blurb below the cover, and don’t forget that Staff and Crown comes out February 28th!

The Blurb:

Three years have passed since Annabel defeated Mordion in the Royal Castle and became the Queen Heir of New Civet. That’s a good thing, since the Castle spat her out three years into the past.

Three years of statecraft, politics, and meeting important people are over. Now, before she is officially acknowledged as the Queen Heir, Annabel will face her biggest challenge: Trenthams Finishing School for Young Ladies.

To win her Staff and Crown, Annabel had to deal with a deadly foe, a slightly self-aware castle, and a more-than-slightly-potty wizard. Now she will contend with corsets, diets, and sharp-tongued socialites; not to mention the Old Parrasian revolution that seems to be brewing in the bowels of the school itself.

In fact, Trenthams might be even more dangerous and cryptic than the Royal Castle. It’s a good thing Annabel has the staff, her cat, and her trusty advisor, Isabella…

–oOo–

Staff and Crown is the third book in the Two Monarchies Sequence, which means that now there’s only one more book in the series to write! I’m at the same time excited and sad about that. I’m excited because I’m really looking forward to tying up tiny loose ends and finishing off the overarching thing that has been wafting through each of the books. I’m sad because I’ve loved writing this series. I am also a little bit cheered by the fact that I still have Susan’s book to write; so I’ll certainly be dipping back into that world after the Two Monarchies Sequence officially finishes…

Cover Reveal: A TIME TRAVELLER’S BEST FRIEND

Guys, I’m so excited! I’ve been wanting to update the cover for A TIME TRAVELLER’S BEST FRIEND for a little while now (I mean, I love the old one, too, but I needed something more commercially viable), but I wanted to make sure that I first a). had an idea of the sort of thing I wanted, and b). had the second volume written and almost ready to go.

Of course I got Jenny to do the cover. I knew how good she was going into this, and the conversations we had about the cover really had me excited, so I had very high expectations of the cover.

Those expectations? They were totally blown out of the water. This cover. I mean, THIS COVER, GUYS.

It’s perfect. It’s amazing. It’s my FAVOURITE COVER SO FAR.

Guys, I can’t even—I just—just WOW

Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks: I’ll be blogging and talking about A TIME-TRAVELLER’S BEST FRIEND: MEMENTO MORI over the next two months in preparation for publication day in September. Closer to the day there will be another cover reveal, and you can expect excerpts, competitions, and giveaways, etc.

Also, don’t forget to let me know if you’re not on my Awesome Beta Readers list and want to be. I’m signing up Betas over the next week, in particular for this scifi series; so if you love Douglas Adams-esque scifi, message/pm/email me!

Cover Reveal: MEMORIES OF ASH by Intisar Khanani

I’m excited to have Intisar Khanani on the blog today, revealing the cover for her newest novel Memories of Ash. This cover was designed by the amazing Jenny of Seedlings Design Studio (who, you may recall, also did my fabulous MASQUE cover). There’s also a Kindle Fire giveaway, so make sure to scroll down to the end of the post to enter.

I’ve already read Intisar’s THORN and SUNBOLT: two amazing novels. You’ll probably know by now that I love fully fleshed, beautifully crafted characters- not only does Intisar deliver on that point, she also writes gorgeous, lush prose and amazingly detailed settings. Add to that major heartstring-tugging, and you’ve got an author who is on my auto-buy list. Seriously, if I ever end up writing half as well, I’ll be extremely pleased with myself. Well, enough from me: over to Intisar!

Describe Memories of Ash in 3 words.

Walk with courage.

What compelled you to write your first book?

I always wanted to write a novel, so my senior year of university I decided I’d better buckle down and try. I chose a fairy tale (The Goose Girl) to give me an over-arching plot and narrative structure, and then went to town with it. I really wrote it as an exercise to test myself, not intending to do anything with it when I finished. But, by the time I finished, I loved my characters so much that I ended up working through over a dozen revisions to take it from “writing exercise” to my debut novel, Thorn.

If you could live in one of your books, which one would you choose?

Definitely the world of the Sunbolt Chronicles. Sunbolt follows Hitomi, a street thief with a propensity to play hero when people need saving, and her nemesis, the dark mage who killed her father. Although there is a lot of darkness in Sunbolt, there’s also a lot of light. It’s a real world, in its way, and I love the diversity and vibrancy of the cultures and creatures that populate it. I’d have my choice of living in a tropical island sultanate reminiscent of historic Zanzibar, or among the nomadic desert tribes that eke out an existence alongside the cursed Burnt Lands, to name my two favorite options. Then again, in Memories of Ash, there’s the decaying grandeur of the capitol of a fallen empire that feels a lot like an Istanbul of old, right at the heart of the Eleven Kingdoms. Plus, I wouldn’t mind having shape-shifting friends and charms to keep my bread from burning.

What authors, or books, have influenced you?

As a young duckling, I imprinted on Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley’s earlier works. I read pretty widely, but those are the authors I kept coming back to, especially McKinley’s Damar books. I am also an incorrigible Jane Austen fan, but my books don’t reflect that very much!

What are you reading now?

I just finished “Kingdom of Ruses” by Kate Stradling. In a kingdom where the eternal prince who rules is just a ruse kept up by the prime minister’s family (and most recently, Viola, our heroine), keeping the peace is a delicate thing. Enter a stranger who manages to take the place of the doppelganger the family uses, and Viola has her hands full.

And here it is…

MoA_FC_FNL16_BN

In the year since she cast her sunbolt, Hitomi has recovered only a handful of memories. But the truths of the past have a tendency to come calling, and an isolated mountain fastness can offer only so much shelter. When the High Council of Mages summons Brigit Stormwind to stand trial for treason, Hitomi knows her mentor won’t return—not with Arch Mage Blackflame behind the charges.

Armed only with her magic and her wits, Hitomi vows to free her mentor from unjust imprisonment. She must traverse spell-cursed lands and barren deserts, facing powerful ancient enchantments and navigating bitter enmities, as she races to reach the High Council. There, she reunites with old friends, planning a rescue equal parts magic and trickery.

If she succeeds, Hitomi will be hunted the rest of her life. If she fails, she’ll face the ultimate punishment: enslavement to the High Council, her magic slowly drained until she dies.
